Choice of Timber – The carpenters use three different timbers for these solid wooden tablets. They all are excellent as a lawn memorial. Oak is very beautiful and it is heavy and long lasting. Its only disadvantage is that it will turn black if not maintained.
Iroko is another timber we often use for wooden tablets. It is also a hardwood, somewhat similar to teak and very durable due to the fact it is full of its own oil.
Finally, there is Balau – a dense hardwood which is very incredibly heavy – so much so when you pick it up, it feels as heavy as stone. It is exceptionally durable and very long-lasting, again full of its oil. Its only disadvantage is the fine cracks and sometimes black pinholes which are characteristic of this timber.

The Wording
The price includes 50 characters with extra letters being £4 per 50. The text is engraved into the tablet using either a laser or CNC router, depending on the size of the text and images. The lettering is normally painted left unpainted or painted black. Other paint colours are available.
Wooden memorials won’t last as long as slate, granite, or metal ones, as wood deteriorates, especially in wet conditions. The lifespan of a wooden memorial depends on several factors, including the type of timber used, the level of care, and the placement of the memorial. At The Sign Maker, we recommend using Iroko, a wood rich in natural oils, and treating it four times a year with Devon oil for the best durability. Oak treated with satin varnish is another good option for plaques that are not placed directly on the ground. Ideally, keep the memorial off the ground. For woodland burials, we offer a wooden post with wooden dowels. If you need to place a wooden memorial on the ground, use 90mm thick Iroko. Avoid burying wooden memorials directly into the ground.
