The Importance Of Memories

Memories are an important part of how we establish identity in ourselves and connection with others. Consequently, there is something special about being able to explore shared experiences with one another – particularly in seasons of grief. Finding a way through grief is not about forgetting those who have passed away, but about allowing ourselves to remember the essence of who they were so that their presence might remain with us. Remembering someone we loved might be painful at first, but there can be joy in remembering, and our treasured memories are perhaps the best place to start. 

Immersing Ourselves in Memories

Memories give us multidimensional access to moments in our lives. I say this because the memories that we draw upon tend to be sensory – prompted, for example, by a scent, sighting or by taste. There is something less daunting about allowing ourselves to grieve through our memories, particularly when we can share these moments with other loved ones or within a community.

For example, just recently, a member of the team had the opportunity to visit RHS Rosemoor as they hosted a ‘Vintage Weekend’. There were military reenactments, old-school music and dancing, and her favourite part, a whole host of vintage vehicles. Given that her grandparents owned a blue, vintage MG sportscar in the early years of their relationship, she found herself doing some reminiscing of her own, and she wasn’t the only one!

As she wandered around the arboretum, there was a buzz on the lips of many, exclaims of ‘Do you remember when?’, or ‘I used to love those 70’s print curtains’. She described it as ‘a special weekend to witness, and a wonderful example of how when individuals are given the space to reminisce – they will do so freely’! This illustrates the value of allowing yourself to remember and reminds us why it is important to honour the memories that we have.

Exploring Memories In Day To Day Life

Immersing yourself in your memories of a loved one might look like baking their favourite cake, wearing a perfume that you know they liked, visiting somewhere you might have gone together, or perhaps just allowing yourself the space to remember. Remembering Loved Ones with Photo Memorials

Why Choose a Photo Memorial?

Memorials are often used to mark a resting place or to honour the life of someone who has passed away. Given the sentiment of these pieces, photo memorials have grown in popularity over the past few years, particularly due to the advances in technology and crafting techniques. We find that people cherish being able to design a memorial with personality, allowing memorials to be a better reflection of who someone really was to them – and often these pieces will include a photo. 

Etched Photo Memorials

Etched photo memorials are ideal if you are looking a budget-friendly photo memorial. The etching processes vary depending on the material, but ultimately etching is an application of pressure that forms patterns within the surface of a material. 

Brass is known to be a traditional choice for a memorial – however brass photo memorials are increasing in popularity too. The photos and text for these memorials are chemically etched into the brass. This process produces some incredible results, leaving sharp, clean lines and a high-quality image. It is this quality finish that preserves brass’ place as a much-loved material for memorial pieces. 

The natural appearance of wooden memorials is attractive to many. Some find a wooden plaque to be a less formal option than the traditional use of brass or stone. The laser engraving process involves the lettering and images being burnt into the wood, leaving a stunning etched effect for these photo memorials. Stainless Steel is a stand out choice for a memorial due to it being a material of superb quality. Again, through the chemical etching process, a black and white photo can be added to these pieces (you can submit a black and white photo, or ask our talented design team to convert a coloured photo for you). Unlike printed photo memorials, this image will not fade, which is a definite advantage of choosing stainless steel.

Finally, aluminium is another great choice of material with its smart finish and elegant look. The photos are lasered into the material and come out very well.

Impact Engraved Memorials

This process is used on our granite memorial and is created when a Diamond bit is impacted upon the granite to make an image. This can then be left natural or be painted. It is a choice that is growing in popularity due to its uniqueness.

Porcelain Plaques:

Our photo memorial plaques are made from vitreous porcelain using ceramic pigments which are fade resistant. We produce these pieces in various shapes and sizes, enabling you to be creative with the design of a porcelain plaque. Once finalised, the photo memorial is fired at 860˚, making the piece durable. Our porcelain photo memorial plaques also come in a small range of different colours, which can be a lovely touch to experiment with.

Printed Memorials

Printed memorials are a wonderful way to pay tribute to a loved one. Some find the inclusion of a full-colour photo to be an important part of remembering someone through their memorial – which is why we offer several types of printed memorials. 

Anodised aluminium has a reputation for being tough! It is that toughness that makes the anoprinted Aluminium memorials last a lifetime. The image is locked within a hard layer, preventing any damage from being able to come to the memorial itself (ideal if you’re looking for an outdoor memorial that may be at risk of vandalism). These pieces can be designed with either a silver or gold background (though we would recommend silver alongside images). We believe anoprinting to be the toughest kind of full print finish around, which is why this process creates memorials truly fit for purpose.

An alternative is the full colour printed memorial. Given the advances in technology, and the popularity of digital photographs, people seem to treasure being able to celebrate their loved ones with a full-colour photo memorial plaque. These full-colour photos can be set into a material of your choosing (wood, slate, granite or corian), or they can stand alone. Guide To Buying A Wooden Casket

Wooden Caskets are designed for the storage of ashes and are popular after crematorial funeral services. At UK memorials, they are crafted using solid timber and can be designed with or without an engraved plaque. Their simple and elegant appearance is just one part of what gives them their high-quality finish and they can be crafted using a small variety of different timbers to give you the finish that you are looking for.

We appreciate that planning a memorial be challenging which is why we wanted to create this blog to explore some of the casket options we have. 

Standard Wooden Casket

The special thing about a wooden casket made at UK Memorials is the high-quality feel. Made from Solid Oak, treated in Satin Varnish or to look like Mahogany or can be painted, the standard caskets are attractive, well made and designed to last – the perfect way to store your loved ones’ ashes safely and securely. The lids of the caskets are permanently fixed to the main body of the box. 

In additional to the standard ash casket, in the same style we also stock small, double and tall caskets. 

In order to place the ashes within the box, you can open it by unscrewing the bottom. The standard solid oak caskets are perhaps the most popular choice here, but all three make a perfectly fitting tribute.

Wording can be engraved directly onto the wood of the casket and this is not just restricted to the top but we can laser engrave the sides as well. 

Many like to include a plaque in the design of the casket (though others prefer to have the lettering and detailing engraved directly into the wood which has a beautiful effect). The plaques can be made from traditional brass, coloured aluminium or acrylic laminate – all three fitting with the wooden caskets well. The brass plaques do require a little upkeep to keep it looking clean and cared for whereas the other plaques require little to no maintenance. 

Small images and pictures can be included within any of our engraving options which is a lovely way to personalise a casket. You can speak to us about what you are looking for and we will send you a quote and a proof copy of the design for you to approve. 

Shaped Corners

Similar to the standard caskets in the treatments is our Shaped Corner Ash Caskets, with either a natural oak, mahogany finish or painted. These caskets boast more detailed features such as the pillar corners. These caskets come with flat edges to plaques can applied to the sides as well as the top.

Woodland Ash Caskets

The woodland ash caskets are designed without any metal fixtures. These caskets are particularly popular (and necessary) for natural burials. Some natural burial sites will specify that the casket should not have metal within it so that it remains as natural as possible. The fixtures, fittings and fixings are secured with wooden dowels. Though they are similar in appearance to other caskets, they are made using only natural materials which is sometimes a preferable choice. 

The engraving for these caskets can be lasered directly into the wood as opposed to having an additional metal plaque. The finish of these pieces is stunning and it would make a special but fitting tribute to a loved one.

We make war memorials in a whole range of different materials for long-lasting and poignant tributes.

As we come up to this season of remembrance, here at UK Memorials we wanted to take the opportunity to write and reflect at this time of year. Remembrance is a national opportunity to mark the anniversary of Armistice Day and to recognise the sacrifices made by many to protect the freedom that we have today. 

We understand and appreciate how challenging it can be to make decisions around the memorial of those that we have lost, so we want to make this process as easy as possible for you, while still creating something special and significant. Whether looking for a traditional plaque, wooden cross or a modern heart-shaped memorial, we create a wide range of memorials and believe it is important that they are carefully crafted for you. To help with this process, we have created this simple guide of some of the most popular memorials that we can put together alongside you, as you remember your loved ones. 

Cast Memorial Plaques

Cast memorial signs have a long-lasting finish and are made using a combination of the latest technology and traditional craftsmanship methods The cast making process gives you more freedom in the designing process because you can choose from a wider variety of fonts, motifs, layouts and stylistic lettering. Once cast, your plaque will then be tended to by hand and given the final finesse that you’re looking for. 

Cast bronze is a timeless classic for memorial plaques. The background of the bronze can be left natural or painted in. Patented bronze is also an option available at UK Memorials which would give your memorial plaque a finish to be proud of. The Cast Bronze Memorial Plaques can be made in a variety of shapes too (another benefit of choosing a cast sign). A popular choice for memorial plaques is the cast bronze memorial heart. A cheaper alternative is the cast aluminium memorial signs, still a traditional choice but possibly more cost-effective. Corian 

Corian is a stone-like material with a clean composition, made up from clear acrylic resin, natural minerals and pigments – meaning that it is available in a variety of colours. Memorial Crosses

At UK Memorials, we make a range of wooden crosses that are particularly popular around remembrance. Wooden crosses were first used to mark the graves of soldiers who had died in battle but they now serve as a remembrance sign nationally. They are handmade traditionally using Oak timber but could also be made for you in Iroko, Opepe or Sapele. The lettering can be engraved directly into the wood. Alternatively, you could choose to have a metal plaque created. Though more expensive than the wooden crosses we make, stone-like Corian also makes beautiful and distinctive memorial crosses. They tend to last longer and can be used as either a grave marker or a permanent memorial. Wooden Plaques

Corian Crosses

A memorial cross is a meaningful way to remember a loved one and here at UK Memorials we make a range of different memorial crosses. One of our less traditional cross options is our Corian crosses.

Since Corian is one of the lesser-known materials that we use, we thought we’d explain a bit more about what Corian is and why it could make an ideal choice for a memorial cross.

What is Corian?

Corian is a manufactured material composed of 66% natural minerals derived from a type of sedimentary rock called bauxite ore and 33% acrylic polymer (resin). Put more simply, it is a mix of natural stone dust and synthetic resin. Despite being manufactured, Corian actually looks and feels very similar to natural stone. It is cold to the touch and available in many colours and patterns to make it appear like its natural stone counterparts, such as slate, granite, and marble.

Other features of Corian include the fact that it is non-toxic, non-allergenic, and has received certifications for its environmental performance, such as the SCS (Scientific Certification Systems) certification for recycled materials. These are important features for us here at UK Memorials as our ethos is to protect the environment so when thinking about how to create our memorial crosses we strive to source environmentally-friendly materials. Our Corian crosses won’t pollute the ground or nearby water sources, vegetation, and wildlife.

Why choose Corian?

The main benefit of Corian is it’s durability. It is longer-lasting than more traditional choices for memorial crosses, such as wood, and it wont stain easily or lose its visual appearance for decades. Corian also has low moisture absorption and is resistant to humidity, freeze-thaw conditions, and environmental pollutants, meaning our crosses are suitable for all elements.

Another benefit of our Corian crosses is the fact that they are virtually maintenance-free. Unlike some other materials, Corian doesn’t need to be treated regularly and its smooth surface can be easily wiped clean if it comes into contact with dirt or soil.

Visually, our Corian crosses are completely smooth with no flaws, where other materials, such as natural stones will have natural grains and markings. Whilst some people find these imperfections interesting, for those that want a clean, flawless memorial, Corian crosses are definitely the better choice.

We make our Corian crosses on-site in two different styles: ‘The Standard Memorial Cross’ and ‘The Celtic Cross’. Our standard cross style is a simple and traditional cross shape, while our Celtic cross is more elaborate and decorative. Both styles can be made in a variety of colours and sizes ranging from small to large.

Our designers have access to a large range of fonts and images and will work with you to create the perfect design for your cross. Once your layout is agreed on by yourself, we laser engrave your design onto the cross and fill it with paint. For lighter coloured Corian crosses, we recommend black, brown, dark green, and blue paint, whereas white, light grey, gold, and silver letter colours are recommended for slate grey Corian.

Lawn Memorials

Welcome back to our blog, we hope you are all well. Today we wanted to bring you a blog about Lawn Memorials and the different types we make. 

What are Lawn Memorials

Lawn memorials are thicker stone or wooden plaques that are placed in lawn areas to remember and cherish a loved one. They are very in keeping with the natural surroundings that they are so often placed in. Some natural burial sites will allow lawn memorials but others choose to celebrate their loved one in gardens or sentimental places and a lawn memorial is a beautiful way to do this. 

The Types of Lawn Memorials we craft

When it comes to lawn memorials here at UK Memorials we craft either wooden or stone lawn memorials. Both are beautiful materials with very different qualities, but both can be truly bespoke and unique thanks to the help of our highly skilled designer who can help to create a lovely design. 

Wooden Lawn Memorials

Our wooden lawn memorials are made onsite by our skilled carpenters from raw timber to finished memorials. You can choose to have your lawn memorial in one of three beautiful timbers Oak, Iroko and Balau. 

Oak is very traditional with a beautiful grain. It is a very hard and durable timber but just like all timber does require regular maintenance to keep it from water damage. With Oak, we will either treat with Satin Varnish or Devon Oil depending on your requirements. 

Oak lawn memorials are traditional material and a very popular choice here at UK Memorials.

Iroko is a stunning, rich timber with a pretty grain. Again this is a fantastic hardwood which is very stable and naturally oil which makes it an excellent choice for outdoor use. Because it is so naturally oily we only treat with an oil and do not varnish. The colour in Iroko can vary from a light golden brown to a dark chocolate brown colour.

Iroko memorials show case a beautiful redish brown colour and weather well.

Finally, we have a timber called Balau. It is not as pretty as Oak but it is a very hard, stable wood that weathers well in wetter conditions. It is full of its own natural oils which makes it a good choice for lawn memorials. The colour will vary from a light yellow-brown to brown. 

The wooden memorials can have the wording/images simply lasered onto the wood which is a very popular option as it is very natural and provides a brown/burnt finish. While others like to have the wording/images painted. 

Balau Lawn memorials are an excellent choice due to their natural oils and longevity.

Stone Memorials

The other option available for lawn memorials is stone, here at UK Memorials we create stone lawn memorials in either slate or granite. Slate is a very popular choice because it has a very understated, elegant look. The slate lawn memorials can come in 20mm, 30mm, 50mm and 75mm thick and can be cut to virtually any size but we do have some standard/recommended sizes on our website. Some customers choose to simply have the wording blasted and left while others like to have the letters painted. We have a good selection of stock paint colours to choose from. Finally, with slate lawn memorials we recommend treating them with oil for a darker finish, however if you would prefer to have them left natural we can do this as well.

As mentioned before we do also make lawn memorials from granite. We stock 4 main different granite colours including, Celtic Grey, Black, Classic Dark Grey and Kerula Green. Granite is a lovely, rich material that oozes quality. It comes in a range of thickness and sizes all of which can be seen on our website. Again, just like the slate some customers choose to have the lettering left natural while others choose to have it painted. Popular combinations include Black Granite with Gold lettering and Celtic Grey Granite with Black lettering.

Beautiful Brass

Beautiful brass, a traditional material that is still very popular in memorials today and for good reason. It is very versatile, can have lots of different engraving techniques applied and once polished looks stunning. The Material

Here at UK Memorials we use a top quality CZ120 brass which has a good corrosion resistance. When purchasing any type of brass makes sure to check with the company what brass they use as this will effect the longevity of the product and how often maintenance will have to be give. Our brass is the carefully cut by one of the engraver technicians, the edges are bevelled and holes are given if required. The engraving technician will then polish the brass until it is bright, shinning and mark free. It is then engraved using one of our many methods which we will talk you through next.

The Methods

When it comes to how we engrave our brass memorials, we have a couple of different techniques based on the design of the memorial. Here at UK Memorials we have highly trained designers onsite who will help you design the perfect memorial. For some customers, this is simply wording laid out that is pleasing to the eye. For these types of plaques, our engrave technicians use a method called deep engraved. This is where the lettering is engraved into the brass and then paint filled, most often with black paint. Other customers, however, have wanted much more detailed imaging alongside the wording. To achieve this our engrave technicians can use a method called scratch engraved. This is where the brass is scratched into to create the design but is not paint filled. It is very effective and often looks particularly good alongside deep-engraved lettering. Finally, if you wanted a full-colour image or logo then the best option is our chemically etched brass which produces beautiful, full-colour memorials with a very high-quality finish.

Additional Features

Some customers will choose to simply have the brass plaque on its own for use on walls, benches and indoor remembrances. While other customers want to be able to have the plaques near planted trees or memorial sites. If this is the case you can have a wooden backing board for your plaque to sit on. Our high-quality backing boards are made out of either Oak which is treated with an industrial-strength satin varnish and wood milk to increase longevity. Or Iroko which is a timber that is very naturally oily which we only oil as it doesn’t like varnish. All our backing boards are made by our carpenters and are made around 25mm bigger all round than the plaque itself. You can choose to mount plaques on backing boards and put them both on a wall or you can have a tree stake to hold the plaque above the ground. Here at UK Memorials, we have a few types of tree stakes available. There are our Wrought Iron Tree stakes which are made by our blacksmith, these are galvanised and painted black. Alternatively, you can opt for our Angle Iron Tree Stakes which are slightly chunkier than our Wrought Iron Ones. Finally, you can opt for our wooden tree stakes which are a popular choice for those who prefer timber to metal. Everything you need to know about Wooden Crosses

Here at UK Memorials, we have highly skilled carpenters onsite who spend time creating quality wooden crosses. They are often used for a variety of reasons, from grave markers before the headstone is set, as a memorial in a garden or used for woodland burials. Our wooden crosses come in six different sizes ranging from small to XX- large. They are usually made from traditional oak but can be made from our other timbers too which include the likes of Iroko, Sapele and more. At UK Memorials we feel it is important that each cross is bespoke and unique, that is why we provide an abundance of choice.

The Design

With designers onsite and a huge selection of fonts and images to choose you can have a truly unique wooden cross. Take a look at the fonts and images and send us in some information around what you might like. Then let our designer create a beautiful proof for your approval. Not quite happy with the look, no problem we can switch up the font, layout and image to meet your satisfaction. Only until you are 100% happy with the design will we go into production.

Additional Plaques

Although many of our customers choose to have the wording lasered directly onto the wooden cross, others have opted to have a plaque. You can choose from a variety of engraved plaques including brass which is very traditional. Lasered Acrylic laminate for a long-lasting plaque that is also budget-friendly or a bronze plaque for a more luxurious finish. A couple of our customers have opted for something completely different such as a rustic slate lasered and mounted onto the cross.
