Wooden Memorials
Using the skills of our carpenters and the imagination of the designers we do maker very beautiful wooden memorials. They can be simple with just a few words or have many words including a touching poem. Using an interesting font or adding an image or two can make all the difference. If you don’t have a suitable image just tell the designer what you have in mind and they can find one for you.
The two main timber we use are Oak and Iroko. Oak because it is very beautiful and Iroko for easy maintenance. We can varnish the oak with a commercial satin varnish or oil it with Devon Oil. Iroko is simply oiled.

Oak is heavy and long lasting, but does have the disadvantage that it will turn black if not maintained. Iroko is also a hardwood, somewhat similar to teak and very durable due to the fact it is full of its own oil.

Fonts and Images
The Wording
The price includes 50 characters with extra letters being £4 per 50. The and images if required are engraved into the wooden plaque using a laser. The lettering is normally painted left unpainted or painted black. Other paint colours are available.
Wooden memorials won’t last as long as slate, granite, or metal ones, as wood deteriorates, especially in wet conditions. The lifespan of a wooden memorial depends on several factors, including the type of timber used, the level of care, and the placement of the memorial. At The Sign Maker, we recommend using Iroko, a wood rich in natural oils, and treating it four times a year with Devon oil for the best durability. Oak treated with satin varnish is another good option for plaques that are not placed directly on the ground. Ideally, keep the memorial off the ground. For woodland burials, we offer a wooden post with wooden dowels. If you need to place a wooden memorial on the ground, use 90mm thick Iroko. Avoid burying wooden memorials directly into the ground.
